Safe Business Practices: What Happens After You’re Injured on the Job

Once every seven seconds in the United States, someone gets injured while on the job.

Nobody wants to think about this happening to them. There’s always a possibility, though, especially if you work in a high-risk field like construction.

Because of this, it’s important to be prepared and know what to do if you’re injured on the job. Read on to learn how to proceed should an accident occur.

Get to Safety

The first thing to consider is your safety and the safety of your coworkers. If your accident involves a piece of machinery, for example, turn the machine off (or direct someone else to turn it off) so it can’t cause any additional harm.

Seek Medical Care

Once you know that you and your coworkers are safe, it’s important to seek medical care. Call an ambulance or ask someone to take you to an urgent care facility to get checked out.

Even if you don’t think your injuries are severe, you shouldn’t skip this step. If you don’t get a check-up and treatment right away, you may have a harder time proving that your injuries result from the accident. This could affect your claim.

Report the Accident

Be sure to report the accident to a supervisor or manager, too. They need to know right away so they can take additional steps to secure the area and make sure you receive the appropriate treatment.

If you don’t have time to talk to someone face to face before getting medical care, tell someone else to report it for you. Then, follow up as soon as you can to provide additional details and figure out what to do next.

Complete a Worker’s Comp Claim

Someone from work, such as a supervisor or HR rep, will give you paperwork to fill out regarding your accident. These forms will help you get the coverage you need to pay for your medical treatment and compensate you for any time you need to take off work.

You might need to see a workers comp doctor too for additional check-ups to evaluate the extent of your injuries.

Consider Hiring a Lawyer

If your claim is denied or if the compensation you receive is not sufficient, consider hiring a workers’ comp lawyer. They can help you by filing an appeal and getting the money and treatment you deserve.
