How Kate Robertson And David Jones Are Pioneering Global Change At One Young World

One Young World’s Kate Robertson believes in the transformative power of shaping new movers and shakers. Together with her co-founder, David Jones, Robertson has built a global forum that connects and cultivates the next generation of change-makers.

Robertson’s journey with One Young World began in 2009, sparked by a simple yet powerful idea: Bring together exceptional rising activists from every country to tackle global issues. Drawing on her marketing background and passion for leadership, Robertson set out to create a platform that would amplify blossoming voices on the world stage.

“One Young World’s mission to empower young leaders grows more urgent every day as the world faces multiple crises and a failure of leadership at the highest levels,” Kate Robertson said in her organization’s 2023 impact report. “We could not have come so far, and we could not continue to drive forward, without our staff, our partners, our ambassadors, and everyone who shares our vision of tackling the world’s biggest challenges head-on.”

This focus on hope and action distinguishes One Young World from other global forums. Kate Robertson and Jones envisioned an event that would not only showcase tomorrow’s luminaries but also catalyze real-world impact.

One Young World held its first summit in 2010, bringing delegates from over 190 countries together. The organization has since grown exponentially, hosting annual gatherings in cities worldwide and building a network of more than 17,000 ambassadors.

Robertson credits early support from influential figures like Desmond Tutu, Sir Bob Geldof, and Kofi Annan for helping launch the initiative. Their endorsements lent credibility to the fledgling enterprise and attracted attention from fresh voices eager to participate.

“When those global figures committed to supporting the inaugural event, it was the most immense vote of confidence,” Robertson recalls of those early conversations. “‘We felt huge pressure to live up to their endorsement.”

Empowering Budding Voices

The summits serve as a unique platform for fresh engagement on global issues. Delegates attend plenary sessions, workshops, and networking events, gaining exposure to world leaders and experts across various fields.

Robertson emphasizes the importance of creating an environment where trailblazers feel valued and heard. One Young World continues to be community-centric, allowing it to stay ahead of emerging international trends. Robertson points out that the organization was addressing issues like extremism and climate change years before they became mainstream concerns.

“As an example, we’ve been working on countering violent extremism since 2016,” she says. “By working with young people, it’s incredibly forward-looking, and that is just incredibly engaging and exciting, but also humbling and inspiring.”

While the annual summit serves as One Young World’s flagship event, Robertson stresses that the impact extends far beyond those four days. One Young World provides year-round support to its ambassadors through mentorship programs, funding opportunities, and regional events.

“We always say the summit is just four days and then our work is the other 361,” Robertson explains.

This ongoing engagement has led to tangible results. According to Robertson, One Young World ambassadors have impacted more than 50 million lives through their projects, ranging from education initiatives to healthcare innovations.

Partnering For Progress

One Young World’s success relies heavily on partnerships with businesses, governments, and other organizations. Robertson and Jones have cultivated relationships with over 250 partners, including major corporations like BMW, L’Oréal, and AstraZeneca.

These partnerships not only provide financial support but also create opportunities for next-generation change-makers to engage with established institutions. Robertson believes this collaboration is crucial for driving meaningful change.

Facing Global Challenges

Robertson acknowledges the immense challenges facing today’s youth, from climate change to political instability. However, she remains optimistic about the potential for up-and-coming pacesetters to drive positive change.

This global perspective informs One Young World’s approach to addressing complex issues. Robertson emphasizes the importance of fostering dialogue and understanding across different cultures and backgrounds.

As One Young World continues to flourish, Robertson and Jones remain focused on elevating aspiring leaders. The organization has ambitious plans for the future, including expanding its scholarship program to ensure even greater accessibility.

And Robertson’s vision for One Young World extends far beyond the organization itself. She hopes to see One Young World ambassadors taking on roles in governments, businesses, and international organizations around the world.

“I think it’s, be part of the most valuable network of young leaders in the world and be part of something that is genuinely hopeful.”

Kate Robertson’s Mission

Through One Young World, Kate Robertson and David Jones have created a powerful platform for youth engagement on global issues. Their work continues to inspire and empower a new crop of notables committed to creating positive change in their communities and beyond.

As the world faces increasingly complex challenges, Robertson’s unwavering belief in the potential of the next generation serves as a testament to the power of hope and collective action. One Young World stands as a conduit for those who believe that a better future is not only possible but within reach.

“One Young World ambassadors are taking a stand for a better future by actively building a fair and sustainable future for all,” Robertson notes.

She adds that one of the most gratifying parts of being part of One Young World is witnessing fledglings grow over time and emerge as independent leaders and thinkers.

“We’re honored to play a part in the phenomenal journeys of these motivated young leaders,” adds Robertson. “We regularly get ambassadors dropping into our office and getting in touch, even a decade after they originally were introduced to us. We’re excited to work with them for years to come.”
