I love that despite the understated nature of it all, she has a little emotional connection to Gordon. More characters such as the mysterious G-Man, reserve Dr. Eli Vance and candid Barney Calhoun provide depth to an intertwining storyline in which each has their own personality traits serving a role in these games.
The story of the game held tension, surprise, and intrigue throughout its 4-hour run time, with our silent protagonist interacting at key points in the plot which sometimes was so mysterious that only G-Man would appear to reveal a bigger part going on outside. Half-Life 2 effectively lit a powder keg of unanswered questions, and as such the ensuing air has filled in with mystery and fan theory, smogged by two years’ worth of caffeinated message board chatter.
For the time being, Half-Life 2 was an out-and-out technical marvel with visuals that would have hit you between your metaphorical video game player eyeballs. Character models are Face Poser engineered, and the game uses dynamic lighting to give you further immersion in your virtual world. The most impressive part was that facial animations truly felt like a step forward, showing characters emote in what appeared to be an organic expression of emotion.

The ambient sounds of City 17, the alone-in-the-Ravenholm dark quiet moments and the ever-prevalent underlying humm-squeal-whurrr-clank of combined machinery -all add to this sense. Where voice acting is concerned, it also reaches high levels, with a stellar cast especially notable are the contributions of Robert Guillaume (as Eli Vance) and Merle Dandridge (as Alyx Vance).
The long-lasting impact of Half-Life 2 on gaming is only comparable to itself, having spawned innumerable other games of all shapes and sizes. Its environmental storytelling, physics-based gameplay, and a marriage of narrative and mechanics still stand as the high watermark for video games. It has been critically praised and is thought to have received the greatest number of GameSpot editors’ choice awards than any other game.
